Engineering apprenticeships | Fabricator Apprentice | Tong Engineering

Apprenticeships at Tong

Tong Engineering apprenticeships are carried out according to the relevant Apprenticeship Standard for each occupational area, in conjunction with training providers including Lincoln, Grimsby and Boston Colleges.

Apprenticeship Standards include specific skills, knowledge, and behaviours an apprentice will need to have learned by the end of their apprenticeship to do the job they are being trained to do.

Learning will be split up into 80% of the time on the job and 20% of the time in structured learning with the college. This is called “Day release”.

Clear Progression

You will be expected to record your learning online in an ePortfolio. Whilst the academic element of the apprenticeship is being delivered by the college, you will also be engaged on the shop floor, learning “on the job”.

Initially, you will perform a rotation around the departments that support the occupational area you’ve chosen for your apprenticeship, which will give you an opportunity to get to know both people and processes throughout the company.

Work Allocation

Following this, you will be allocated a work area and a mentor, and you will begin with the basics, advancing to more complex and demanding tasks as your experience and confidence increases.

You will be fully supported with help and advice from your experienced colleagues throughout this practical aspect of your training.

Qualified Assessments

Once the academic apprenticeship training has been completed you will take an end point assessment (EPA) – this is a collection of independent assessments that offers confirmation of knowledge, skills, and behaviours (known as KSBs) for a particular role.

This is likely to include a formal test or exam. They may also include multiple
choice tests, interviews, professional discussions, and presentations.

All apprentices receive a final grade for their EPA. You will have a mentor from the college/ training provider to support you until you are ready to take the end point assessment.

Apprenticeships at Tong Engineering are available at Level 2 (Intermediate) and Level 3 (Advanced).

We prefer our apprentices to start at Level 2 and progress to Level 3, as this provides more opportunity to gain the practical and theoretical skills necessary to be successful in the roles we have on offer.

If you’re a good team player with the above skills, great attention to detail and are hard working with a passion to succeed, we’d love to hear from you.

Please send your CV with covering letter stating why you are the right person to Jim Worley, Process Improvement Manager, jim.worley@tongengineering.com and we’ll be in touch
