Optical Sorting Caretaker Grading featuring TOMRA 3A

INTEGRATED OPTICAL GRADING LINE Transforming Productivity for WW Martin & Son Through Seamless System Integration

Tong Engineering recently delivered an advanced integrated optical grading line to WW Martin & Son in the north of Scotland. The installation marks a significant upgrade to the company’s seed potato grading operation, increasing throughput, reducing manual labour requirements, and improving grading accuracy.

By incorporating a Flikweert Vision optical sorter and integrating seamlessly with existing Tong equipment, the system ensures consistently high product quality while maximising operational efficiency.

WW Martin & Son are specialist pre-basic seed potato growers based in the north of Scotland, producing high-grade seed for demanding markets. In spring 2024, the business set out to modernise its grading operation to improve efficiency, output, and crop quality.

WW Martin & Son required a new grading line that could:

  • Deliver four precise size splits
  • Provide flexibility for both large bag and box filling
  • Significantly increase productivity
  • Integrate an optical sorting unit to remove defects

After reviewing potential suppliers, the team needed a partner who could not only meet the technical brief but also collaborate closely throughout the design and installation process.

From the outset, Tong Engineering stood apart. Working closely with Charles Tong, the project developed through detailed consultation, multiple site visits, and iterative design refinements.

The final solution included:

  • A bespoke grading line delivering four accurate size fractions
  • Integration of a Flikweert Vision optical sorter to remove defects
  • Full incorporation with existing Tong machinery already on site
  • Seamless integration with an existing Schouten jump grader
  • Flexible end-of-line packing for both boxes and large bags
  • A layout optimised for high throughput and labour efficiency

Prior to dispatch, the customer was invited to Tong’s facility in Spilsby to review the full system. This allowed final refinements and ensured complete confidence before installation.

Installation & Commissioning

The system was delivered to Scotland and installed on-site by Tong’s engineering team, who worked efficiently to integrate the new line with the existing grading infrastructure and ensure smooth commissioning.

The Results

After processing over 4,000 tonnes of high-grade seed potatoes, the benefits have been significant:

  • Productivity per labour unit doubled compared to the previous line
  • Enhanced defect removal through optical sorting
  • Smooth integration with existing equipment, maximising prior investment
  • Increased flexibility and throughput

Ongoing support from Tong’s technical team has also helped the business optimise performance and output.

Customer Feedback

“Having now graded 4,000 tonnes of high-grade seed over the Tong line, we couldn’t be happier. Productivity per labour unit has doubled from our previous grading line, which is more than we anticipated.

Charles and his technical staff have been particularly helpful in offering advice to help us maximise output.

I’m delighted that I placed my business with Tong and proud to be associated with a British success story.”
