Team Tong Spotlight with Sam Grant

As part of our Spotlight blog feature, we grab 15 minutes with a valued member of team Tong to highlight the invaluable role they play in ensuring we build relationships and equipment that lasts for generations to come.

We’re very proud of our friendly and forward-thinking culture here at Tong Engineering, and it is fuelled by the talented and experienced people we are proud to have as part of our workforce. We thrive on the commitment we share together at Tong; where it’s not just a job, it’s a shared passion to achieve the best for our company and our customers.

Despite these unprecedented times that we have all been experiencing over these past months, as we carry on during a Worldwide pandemic, busy times have continued here at Tong Engineering. All departments of our production and manufacturing processes have continued to operate, albeit with necessary adjustments to keep everyone safe. Our workforce have responded amazingly to the challenges presented and orders have continued to progress to fulfilment on schedule.

This week we spoke with Sam Grant a member of our design team here at Tong. Sam is busy designing machinery to go through to the factory for manufacturing.

So, without further ado, lets get to know Sam a little bit more…

Job Role: Design Engineer

Number of years worked at Tong: 13

What does your day-to-day at Tong involve? I design 3D production drawings that go to the factory to be manufactured. I joined Tong 12 years ago as an apprentice in the Welding and Fabrication department. I then went on to spend over 10 years in this department until the opportunity arose, just over a year ago, to join the design team.

Describe Tong in 3 words: Rewarding, interesting & good company

What makes you proud to work at Tong? I am proud to work for a company that is recognised in the agricultural industry worldwide. Everyone here works as a team!

What’s your favourite project you have worked on at Tong? I really enjoyed working on a UK bespoke made sweetcorn line.

What’s the best thing you have learned on the job? As I have worked in more than one department here, it is hard to choose just one. I think it would have to be welding, although learning how to use the CAD software is a close second!!!

If you weren’t living your dream at Tong, what would your dream job be?! A professional cyclist, of course!

Do you have any secret talents or hobbies? Cycling… however, here at Tong my passion for cycling isn’t much of a secret! I also enjoy horse riding

What’s your favourite vegetable? The humble potato

Favourite place to holiday: The Lake District!

Well Sam, that was an interesting 15 minutes with you! It’s been a pleasure!…
