What is Optical Sorting?

Optical sorting is the process of sorting products or items using lasers and cameras.

Optical sorting is used across a wide range of industries, including food processing, recycling, pharmaceuticals, and mining.

Within food production, optical sorting is used to identify and remove defective produce and foreign objects, as well as grade crop and vegetables based on size and quality.

What does an optical sorter do?

The accuracy of an optical sorter means that produce with small defects, irregularities in shapes, and even disease can be identified and removed from the production line.

Optical sorting means a faster production process as the lasers and cameras can sort produce at a much faster speed than the human eye. It also minimises mistakes and reduces the chances of recall.

The data gathered by optical sorting can also be used to measure growth rates, consistency of crop, and throughput levels in real time.
